AFYON KOCATEPE UNİVERSITY

HISTORY
Afyon Kocatepe University, which was founded on July 3, 1992 with the code number 3837, started its educational and training activities on November 10, 1992 by 4 faculties, 2 institutes and 4 vocational schools. However, our university dates back 1974 when Afyon
Finance and Accounting High School was founded as a branch of Eskisehir Economics and Trading Sciences Academy.

GENERAL INFORMATION
At Afyon Kocatepe University, there are presently 12 faculties, 3 institutes, 4 high schools, 1 state conservatory, 16 vocational schools, and 11 application and research centers. These units carry out educational and training activities under 66 departments and 111 programs. Afyon Kocatepe University began 2004-2005 Academic Year with 24.053 students, 1.018 academic staff and 560 administrative officers. It has 3 campuses in Afyon and 2 in Usak.

AHMET NECDET SEZER CAMPUS
Ahmet Necdet Sezer Campus, which is on the side of Afyon-Eskisehir road (with a field of 4.082.974 square meter), was opened on October 26, 2000 by Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the President of Turkey. The central campus brings several educational and administrative units together, including Rectorate Office Building, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science and Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Technical Training, Faculty of Veterinary, Institute of Natural and applied Science, Institute of Health Science, Institute of Social Sciences, Technology Application and Research Center, Central Library, 3 atelier buildings, Baris Manco Youth Fest Field, Ceremony Field, social facilities, and open sport fields. There is also an amphitheatre, a park, a botany garden and a small lake. 130.000 square meter areas are planted, including 70.000 trees and indoor plants.

EDUCATION-RESEARCH
Ateliers and Laboratories
The necessary infrastructure is prepared to make our students enable to carry out their researches at the university where research-based education is given priority. In this connection, a number of laboratories and ateliers equipped with the latest technological devices and educational equipment are available for the use of our students in their courses based on application.
Information Technologies
All the students in our university are provided with internet facilities through internet cafes and computer laboratories. The computer labs are organized in accordance with the needs of each school. Nearly in all departments, computer-training courses are taught as a part of their curriculum.
Central Library
The Central Library constructed on universal standardsas a three-flat building has an area of 2.952 square meters. In the floor, there are seven seminar rooms and three internet training rooms. In the first floor, there are reading rooms with a capacity of 50 people, a music room, a room for online searching by academic staff, an audiovisual materials room and an archive of local and national newspapers. In the second floor, there are 70.000 books, reference sources, thesis, photocopy machines, reception, and a reading room with a capacity of 170 people. The Central Library opens at 8:30-20:00 on weekdays and at 10:00-17:00 on weekends. Online enquiries for the sources at the library are also possible.

ACCOMODATION
Our students do not face with any difficulty in finding suitable accommodation. Near to the Ahmet Necdet Sezer Campus, there is a youth hostel owned by General Directorate of Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution. This hostel has a total capacity of 1960 students, 700 male and 1.260 female. In the hostel area, there are two blocks for male students and four blocks for female students. Within the blocks there are rooms for four or six students. In addition, there are four other youth hostels in the city centre owned by the same institution. Their total capacity can exceed up to 1.110 students. Study rooms, recreation areas, sport halls, canteens, refectories and amphitheatres are available within the hostels. The total number of students who stays at the hostels is 3.070. Apart from these public hostels, there are also many private ones in Afyon. Within the borders of Usak city, there is a hostel area owned by General Directorate of Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution. This hostel area has 2 blocks for 700 female students and 1 block for 300 male students.

HEALTH
Medical service is available for our students at medical centers located in Ahmet Necdet Sezer, Ali Cetinkaya and Halit Ziya Usakligil campuses. The patients who are in need of further treatment are sent to Ahmet Necdet Sezer Application and Research Hospital that offers modern and high quality medical service to the people living both in Afyon and neighbouring provinces. The hospital provides services in three separate buildings, namely at Pink, Blue and Red Hospitals. Although all measures are taken to increase it, the total bed capacity in these hospitals is far from meeting the demands. To solve this problem a project for the construction of a complete hospital building was prepared, whose tender stage was also completed successfully. However, the construction yet to start due to the economic programme of the government, which presently restricts the number of public investments. As time goes by, the need for the completion of this new building gets higher.

CATERING
At our university, each unit has a restaurant and a canteen where fast food and drinks are sold not only at a reasonable price but in conformity with health standards. The canteens are open to serve to the students during the course hours. There are music boxes in the canteens so that students can listen to their favourite music. In restaurants, staff, lecturers, and students can eat various meals on the menu determined by experts on the basis of daily needed calorie intake.

SPORT
Our university has always given importance to the construction of indoor and outdoor sport facilities and halls so that the students can perform various activities. As a result, in all our campuses, there are several sport facilities that enable the students to perform sports whichever they want. The teams formed within the university provide good opportunities for young and skilful students. Under the supervision of School of Physical Education and Sports instructors, our students can play football, basketball, volleyball, court tennis, table tennis, badminton, athletics, rhytshmic gymnastics, steps, hiking, boxing, wrestling, teakwon-do and karate-do and they are able to participate in tournaments through the teams they formed.

SOCIAL LIFE
Aware of the fact that besides a sound education, a modern university should provide its students with opportunities for social activities, our university leads to the organisation of a great number of such events. During the academic year, seminars, symposiums, conferences, and panels are organized. The social, cultural, and sport activities performed by the students through their clubs are supported by our university. New activity clubs are founded in accordance with the demands of the students. A traditional spring festival is organised every year in May, during which stands, sports tournaments, fashion shows, demonstrations, and concerts entertain people. The students use Baris Manco Youth Fest Field with a capacity of 25.000 people for that purpose.

SOCIAL FACILITIES
A well-equipped and multi-purpose modern building was built in a short time (three-months) to provide our university with many social facilities, including accommodation for its guests, relaxing, entertainment activities, and meetings. In this social facilities building opened at the beginning of 2004-2005 academic year, there are 3 suites and 14 rooms with a total capacity of 35 people, a restaurant for 400, a breakfast room for 40, and a playground for children.

CULTURE AND ART

Our university also gives great importance to cultural and artistic activities. In the Ataturk Culture Center located in the city center, activites such as exhibitions, concerts and conferences are organised. In the Book Store, besides course books, many recently-published books are sold as well as several promoting products crafted by the students. The university has another culture center in the city centre, namely M. Riza Cercel Culture Center, where again meetings and demonstrations are held. In addition, each campus has its own conference halls: Erdal Akar and Prof. Dr. Sabri Bektore Conference Halls in Ahmet Necdet Sezer Campus, Hayrettin Barut Conference Hall in Ahmet Karahisari Campus, School of Medicine Conference Hall in Ali Cetinkaya Campus, and finally another conference hall in Halit Ziya Usakligil Campus. Meetings can also be held in the huge room of the Social Facilities building, which is designed to serve for various purposes.
